75 - Entering 2022 full of hope

 .... follows 74 - Time to get working again

My running year (sort of) ended on Tuesday December 21st when I pulled my right hamstring.  I had pulled up sore after a run for the last day of work four days earlier, had run sore with Jack in the jogger at parkrun the next day and really struggled then pulled up 2 km into my run on the Tuesday.

For the next seven days I did a heap of walking, getting out every day multiple times and covering over 61 km.  I also put in some good kilometres on the bike.  The 5km walk at 9 minute pace on Christmas day was a good one.  The hammy started sore but then by the end was feeling good and felt good from that point.

On December 7th I had been through the second of two infusions to treat my membraneous nephropathy (kidney) condition.  Three weeks later I had started to feel that the swelling was not as bad in my legs.  Then I noticed a sudden drop in weight and significantly reduced swelling.  This has given me hope that 2022 will be a great year!

Wednesday December 29th - I decided to have a test run on the last Wednesday of the year. I stretched before running and again about 600 metres in.  The hamstring felt good but I did feel like I hadn't run in a week - rusty.  In the last kilometre I just felt that if I pushed any harder it would put some strain on my hammy.  I followed up the run with a 24 km cycle out to Cape Paterson and back.

Thursday was just a bit of stupidity that risked undoing all the great work of the previous week of walking.  I went out for a run and felt great early.  I decided to run eight short intervals for the Run the World 8th birthday.  My hamstring started to feel a bit sore on the fourth.  I ran a slow lap of the courts, ran two slower intervals then pushed for the last two.  Then I headed home, stopping and walking after 4 km.  There was a little soreness after the intervals.

Friday was a rest day and then I was all set for a good effort at parkrun on the first of 2022.  I set off on the warm up but 800 metres in disaster struck with the right hammy pulling tight again.  I stopped, stretched and then turned back on a slow jog but after a few hundred metres stopped and just walked back.  I rac parkrun slowly with Emma while pushing Jack in the pram.  It was ok at that speed.  It did tighten when it cooled down.

I had a rest from running on Sunday, walking 7 km on the beach instead.  I had been in the ocean on Saturday and went in again on Sunday to give the hamstring some water therapy.

Monday January 3rd to Sunday January 9th
On Monday I decided to jog and give it a proper stretch.  It was slow and I was aware of the hammy throughout.  I followed up with 8 km on the bike - pushing hard - and then iced the hamstring.

Tue 4/1 am:  3.41 km - 5:34 average pace - 5:30 fastest km - Ave stride 1.24 m

Wednesday was a rest day.. I had breaky with Shan and then set off for Echuca to see Matt.  I walked at Kilmore and then again in Echuca.

I missed parkrun on Saturday morning.  Sometimes there are more important things to do than parkrun.  As it turns out it was a good one to miss.  After another rest I was ready to push it a bit and test out the hammy.  It passed with flying colours.  There was a touch of sorness in the right calf but I ran through that.  In the end I was running at just a tick over 4 minute pace in the final kilometre.

Monday January 10th to Sunday January 16th
I came out of Sunday's run feeling good.  My legs recovered well and the hamstring strain is now just a memory.  My calf recovered well and on Monday morning I felt good, so decided to give it a little push over 5 km.  The plan was to ease into it since the 5 km also included the warm up.  I was surprised to find my self running at sub 5 pace after only a few hundred metres and was under 5 minutes for the first kilometre.  The challenge then was to maintain speed over the course as my fitness has dropped off a touch.  I managed to achieve that on a humid morning, finishing lathered in sweat.

I stayed out at Inverloch on Monday night and didn't have running gear but was able to run in board shorts, a t-shirt and old runners on Tuesday morning.  I chose to do an easy run.

Tue 11/1 am:  6.05 km - 5:12 average pace - 4:58 fastest km - Ave stride 1.30 m

On Wednesday I organised a Relay "Race" for the Road Runners, between 6:30 and 7:30 pm at the Guide Park, with the course through the Wetlands.  I ran in a team with Emma and Brett and we named it Team Jack.  Jack came around with me for my second lap.  I started with two consecutive laps, taking the jogger and the change-over.  I ran my first lap at 4:52 pace and then the lap with Jack at 5:08 pace.  I was much faster in my third go at it.

After some nice intervals on Friday my body was feeling pretty good for parkrun on Saturday.  I ran, pushing the jogger and Jack, with Brett running with us.  As usual it was hard work early on but we were setting a cracking pace.  In the third I felt I had an extra gear but Brett was spent so I eased it back just a touch.  We ended with a pretty big stroller PB of around 50 seconds, running sub 5 minute pace for the first time.

On Sunday morning I had an easy run out at Inverloch but extended the distance a touch.  I've had an infected tooth over the weekend and haven't been feeling too well.  The run really drained me.

Monday January 17th to Sunday January 23rd
I started the new week with a short run in Inverloch.  It was a slow start with some good speed in the second half.  I followed up with a soak in the ocean and a cycle.

Friday saw a short run with six intervals at the netball courts.  I built up to some great speed by the sixth where I averaged 20 km/h over the 125 metres.

For the first time in a long while I felt great running at parkrun today.  Running with Jack in the Jogger we took another 80 seconds off our PB together.  I was a bit held up in the crowd early but then held some really consistent pace in the final three kilometres.

On Sunday a runner / PE teacher from over at Sandy Point organised a "Prom Coast" run with a 10 km course on the beach at Sandy Point.  It was 2.5 out (into the easterly) and back then repeat.  He intends on having a run each month.  There were about 25 runners and walkers for the inaugural event.

Tuesday was a rest day but I rode the bike in the morning and again in the evening.

On Saturday morning I headed over the bridge to have a run at Phillip Island parkrun.  It was my first parkrun in a while without Jack in the jogger.  I ran ok, holding my pace well and finishing with my fastest kilometre.

Although I was back at work last Friday it feels like Sunday is the last day of the school holidays, before I settle into a whole heap of runs from home.  I decided to head out to the Desal for a run for something different.  I started with the small loop (east) and continued onto the big loop (west).  I was feeling good so I repeated the small loop before returning to the car.  In the last full kilometre I decided to put the foot down a touch to see what I had.  I finished with a 4:30 and took 5 seconds off my average pace.  I feel that I have lost fitness but the final kilometre in each of the past two runs this weekend makes that a lie.  My legs (and whole body) are feeling good.  Swelling is at a real minimum and I am starting to find some speed in my running.  I feel STRONG.

Monday January 31st to Sunday February 6th
I started the week with a progression run, really pushing it in the fifth kilometre and getting under 4:30 pace for the third day in a row.  It was my seventh straight day of running.

January was a great month with the swelling in my legs all but dissappearing and my running on the rise in both fitness and speed.  I was back at work on Friday and Monday with students returning on Tuesday.  I only had one double maths class on Tuesday but there was significant swelling in my legs at the end of the day.  It had been showing up early on my Tuesday morning cycle and I had my first fluid tablet in quite a while.

On Wednesday I ran well after a rest on Tuesday.  I ran the Wonthaggi hills.  There was swelling in the lower legs before and after the run.

I ran a lot further than expected at Headlampers on Thursday so had a rest day on Frday, cycling instead.  I was surprised by how cold it was and lowered my body temperature in the ride.  I really struggled to warm up again after I got home.

On Saturday at parkrun I was back to pushing Jack in the stroller.  I ran with Brett for 3.5 km then I put my foot down and Jack and I flew home.

With school now back and the year into the swing it was time to start the Wonthaggi Road Runners interval sessions.  I had checked out a course on Sunday afternoon and marked the course after work today.  I posted the notice late on Sunday.  I didn't get any takers in the first week but I went there and made a start.  Knowing I'd be running in the afternoon I ran only 5 km before breakfast then followed up with a short cycle / spin.  

Later I ran 5 of the 1 km "loops" on the interval course.  It was windy but I ran quite well.  My legs are feeling really good at the moment.

So I pushed myself and followed up with a return to kilometre intervals on Tuesday morning.  My body was "alive" all night following the Road Runners session.  I was overall happy with the run but I did need to cut the second fast interval short by 100 m as I was spent.

No Jack at Inverloch parkrun this morning so I got to run solo.  It ended up being my best run since the start of July last year.  Then I was on the way out but now I am on the way back up. After a fast start I waned in the second then come back to finish with three nice consistent kilometres.

74 - TIME to get working again!

Right now I am in terrible shape.  I am well ahead of my 2021 goal, getting my 40 km in per week but I have lost speed and fitness.  I have Membraneous Nephprophilia - a kidney condition that causes proteins to leak into my system and swell my legs.  That doesn't help my running.  I am also carrying too many kg.  I have had a stressful time of late and eating has been a way to get through, eating and drinking junk!  At just ove 88 kg I need to drop at least 3 kg.

In recent times I have included more 10 plus km runs and I will keep doing that.  I hav not done any speed work in recent times and it is time to get back to that.  I also need to get my core exercises going and I have been back on the punching bag so that will continue.

Monday October 11th to Sunday October 17th
I started the new week with some netball court intervals in my first workout session in quite a while.  I ran five strides the length of the courts - a pretty small start, but a start!  Then I ran and picked up the pace for a lap of Parklands estate.

I gave the legs a rest on Wednesday morning and rod my bike 15 km instead.  On Thursday I went out to run 800 rest / 200 intervals.  It was hard work and they were not particularly fast.  I weighed in this morning at a long time high of 89.8 kg, the heaviest I've been in almost a decade!.  This morning I added a short weights session to my punching bag and core sessions - after the run.

Running on Friday morning and it was a real slog.  I have started on speed work this week but during today's run I decided that I need a break.  Whether it is 3 days off or a week, I'll let my body decide.  I had a 4 day break earlier this year but over the past ten years I have not have many breaks from running.  Maybe this will even stretch to 2 weeks?  I will be cycling and walking instead of running though.

I started the week with a run out at the Desal.  It was later in the morning as I was home for Cup weekend.

Tuesday was a running rest day but I cycled 20 km to Cape Paterson and back.  I followed up with a speed session on Wednesday morning.  I was extremely stiff at the start, particularly in the left ankle.  It loosened up well in the warm up though and the intervals ended up being quite good.

Thursday was a long run and the left ankle was stiff at the start again and sore during the run.  I ran ok, averaging under 5 minute pace for the first time in a while on a longer run.

I had a rest on Friday to let the soreness on the left angle settle down.  I did get up and have a cycle to Cape Paterson and back before breakfast.  On Saturday I arranged a (not) parkrun at Inverloch, over Townsend Bluff.

I wanted a longer run on Sunday because I have 13 km at Afterglow in a fortnight.  I drove to the Guide Park and ran the Harmers Haven / Wilson Road loop.  It was my first long run way back in 2014 and I always find it hard.  I was very happy with the pace coming home though.

Monday November 8th to Sunday November 14th
I started the week with a rest day, cycling to the Dalyston Rail Bridge and back instead.

Tuesday was an interval session with a 3 km warm up at the start.  Out on the footpath I found myself running as well as I have in quite some time.  Instead of just one set of netball court intervals I ran the first set of six, did a slow recovery around the oval and then ran another four intervals.  The last two averaged sub 3:10 pace!

Rain, rain, rain!!!! Wednesday morning was wet and I stayed in bed for an unscheduled day off.  I had hoped to get a slow recovery run in.

The run on Friday ended up being the slow recovery that I wanted on Wednesday.  It had rained again on Thursday night and just stopped long enough for me to get my run in.

Saturday morning and there is still no parkrun so I had organised a Road Runners (not) parkrun in Newhaven.  It rained all night and stopped just before 8 am.  We had about ten runners turn up for a run on the loop.  I ran with Caroline as I paces matched well.  We both ran a touch quicker than expected, pushing each other along.  As it turned out the run was my best since a parkrun right at the start of July.

Monday was a rest day and it was too wet and windy to cycle so it was a total rest.

On Saturday morning I went to the WRR parkrun replacement from the stump in Inverloch.  I coordinated and walked 2 km, chatting along the way.  Later I drove to Torquay for Afterglow.  I was staying over in a cabin.  In the evening we were bussed to Point Addis and then ran back into Torquay on the trails and on the beach.  It was a tough run.  I never had plans to run hard and stuck to that but I still found the constant up and downs of the trail very tough.

I pulled up from Afterglow with very sore quads and a stiff left ankle.  I didn't run or ride on Sunday.

Monday November 22nd to Sunday November 28th
I woke up feeling quite stiff on Monday, with soreness in the quads.  I got out for a short run around town to get the body stretched, finishing my run strongly.

On Tuesday I had to leave early for a 6 hour medical treatment in Clayton.  Last Wednesday I had an appointment with my specialist about the Membraneous Nephropathy.  As expected it has deteorated.  I was basically rushed into the next level of treatment.  I was hooked up to a drip for six hours with a drip putting a dose of rituximab through my system with Immuno supression therapy.  I have a second dose in two weeks time.

I was back running on Wednesday morning and had a faster run.

It's Saturday!!!  And parkrun is back!!!! It has been more than 2 months since that one-off parkrun in September and more months before that but, as the world returns to some sort of normality, we are again allowed to gather on a Saturday morning and parkrun.  In the time off Jack has grown and is almost 9 months now.  He is ready to go in the jogger and that is what we did today.  I pushed the jogger for 5 km, my first time ever - so I'm claiming it as a jogger PB - and Brett ran with me.  Emma jogged at her pace (and did well).  Jack had a ball.  He was making all sorts of noises as we ran along the pathway.

I started the new week feeling quite fresh and put in a double interval session with six of the long netball court intervals followed by six three-court intervals.  I flew in the sixth long interval, averaging under 3 minute pace.

I started the week as I finished the previous one - running very slowly.  I didn't intend to be that slow but I just had nothing.  I matched the run with a cycle, as I have done a bit recently in the mornings.

Tuesday was my second treatment at Monash Medical Centre so it was an early rise for a long drive and no time for a run or cycle.

After a Covid recess in 2020 the Wonthaggi Road Runners pizza run was back in 2021 with the group running between Koonwarra and Meeniyan and then eating pizzas at the end.  I've been busy organising it this week and it has worn me out but it was a great evening with my running family.  I only had a short run and walked in the middle with Emma.

Monday December 13th to Sunday December 19th
I started the week with a bike ride out to Cape Paterson to give the body a bit of a rest - and to make up some distance on my annual cycling goal!

I was out running again on Tuesday morning.  It was hard work.  I've been burning the candle at both ends and not really eating well so I am quite heavy at the moment.  I felt the extra weight on Tuesday's run.

Saturday morning and the parkrun routine is now well established again.  It was my third time pushing Jack in the jogger.  I pulled up from the Friday slow jog with a sore right hamstring.  On top of that it was almost 30 degrees and very humid by 8am when parkrun started.  It was a hard slog this week.

Monday 20th December to Sunday 26th December
I cycled again on Monday morning to give the leg another day of rest.  On Tuesday morning I went out for a run after breakfast.  Two kilometers into the run I felt a pull in the right hamstring.  I stopped and stretched then tries to set off again but it wasn't happening.  The hamstring was strained so I u-turned and set off on the walk home.

The injury appears to have ended my running year a little prematurely.  I've reached my goal so I will concentrate on walking and cycling over the next week and a half and hope to be ready to go again on Jan 1st.

73 Can we race again in a Covid world?

 .... follows 72 Lockdown #5 - will we get the XCR season finished?

The 2021 running season, after showing positive sighs early in the season came to a dead halt.  It was my first time as an AV XCR runner and I did get to a few races, including Cruden Farm.  Health issues have slowed me though as well as the lack of the weekly parkrun hitout.\

I have several upcoming events on the calendar - 10km at Melbourne marathon (looking very doubtful), Afterglow in Torquay in November and 8km at Hallora marathon in December.  The signs are that Melbourne will open up with the increased vaccination rates so there is the chance that I'll get to run in two of them.

My goal right now is to slowly increase my fitness with longer runs and to increase my ave stride length in the process.  My best 5 km time as I start this chapter is around 22:30 for the 5 km (4:30 pace).  Inverloch parkrun has just opened up again and we celebrated the 7th birthday on September 11th.  It is hoped that it will continue running.

On Sunday morning I went out to Inverloch for my longer run, running to both ends of the Inverloch coast.  I started at the parkrun stump and ran all the way to the Flat Rocks boat launch, then all the way along the beach to the Yacht Club, up the ramp and then to the end of the foreshore camp ground before returning to the stump.  I was happy with the pace.

Monday September 13th to Sunday September 19th
I finished the weekend with a sore spot on the inside of my left knee and decided to rest it for a bit.  I cycled on Monday morning and then walked 3km at dusck on Monday and Tuesday.  On Monday, after work, I had my second Covid vaccination.

I ran again in the cold on Wednesday morning.  The knee felt ok, although the sore spot is still there.  As such I didn't push it.

It was freezing on Thursday morning, down to ONE degree with frost everywhere.  With the sun rising I set off on my 10 km route.  My knee was feeling ok, as was the ankle.  I ran the second half at under 5 minute pace.

Another day off on Friday, resting up before a big two weeks with the school holidays coming up.  On Saturday morning I cycled early (18 km), ran and then walked 5 km with Emma.

Winter is back for the start of the school holidays.  On Monday morning I checked out the radar and saw a band of rain on the way.  I took the punt that I could beat it and failed.  The rain was so cold, straight in from the southern ocean.  I headed home and cut the run short.

I just couldn't face either a run or a cycle in the cold and wet conditions on Tuesday.  On Wednesday I ran at the Desal for the first time in ages.  Right at the start of my run most of Victoria felt a 5.8 level earthquake and some follow up tremors.  I felt nothing.

On Friday morning I drove to Tidal River on Wilsons Promontory to meet up with Emma and Brett and my grandson Jack.  We all stayed overnight and my Saturday morning run was around Tidal River, with a push for 5 km in the middle.  Throughout the day, after my run I also hiked for 16 km on various tracks around the Prom.

After all of the walking on Saturday my body actually felt quite good on Sunday morning.  I started the day with an 18 km cycle and then headed out to the market at Inverloch.  Then it was a run on the coast road and back along the beach.  I put in seven straight sub 5 minute kilometres and was more than happy with the run.

It was a big weekend and I was feeling it on Monday morning.  I probably shouldn't have run but went anyway, only running 5 km up Townsends Bluff and back from the Inverloch boat ramp.  Later in the afternoon I rode out to Harmers Haven.

Friday ended up being another rest day as I chose to drive over to the 'Burra and walk with Emma and jack instead.  On Saturday morning I ran with the (not) parkrun crew and completed my #2-4-FIVE race for this weekend.  I was right on the pace that I predicted for the race.  My 2nd km was 3 seconds under and my 4th km was 6 seconds over.

72 Lockdown #5 - will we get the XCR season finished?

After a week in Cairns running in the heat, a massive weekend of running and then three days on school camp I returned to Wonthaggi only to enter Lockdown number FIVE.  I had a covid test immediately following the camp, just to be sure, and returned a negative result.

In lockdown FOUR I ran twice a day and improved my fitness with maybe slight improvements in pace.  Now in lockdown FIVE I will try to replicate that effort.  I hope to get in some improved XCR runs but my ultimate goal is to run a fastish (sub 40) 10 km at Melbourne marathon festival in October.

Another week of lockdown looms large and it is not something I am looking forward to.  Living alone is hard and I have not had a face to face conversation with anyone since Friday morning.  I didn't set my alarm and was up just after seven, heading out to the Rec Reserve for a combination of intervals around the outside of the ground and sets of ten step ups.

I am struggling.  Motivation is low, especially given the cold and rough weather, but worse is that my fitness is really low and each run is just a struggle.  On Friday I just couldn't get out of bed to run in the icy conditions but I did go out at lunchtime.  It was hard work though.

With lockdown causing parkrun and event cancellations and preventing people from running in groups, I decided that my Wonthaggi Road Runners group needed some extra motivation.  I decided to organise virtual event.  I decided a Handicap race would be too difficult - gauging where everyone is at.  Also a lot were doing their Run Melbourne half marathon as a virtual run too so I wanted something that would cater for all.  A guess your time race loomed large, but the only other time I ran these was on a set segment.  People would be running all sorts of courses for this! So .....

.... I devised the #2-4-FIVErace.  Competitors had to predict their 2nd km time, their 4th km time and their overall 5 km time - three numbers, making it very difficult to manipulate.

The weekend weather forecast was dire!  I woke late and the sun was blaring in the window.  But then the wind started to come up, a fresh one from the north west.  I got my run in as it started to cloud over and finished just before the drizzly rain arrived.  I had a 2km warm up to get the ankles right then drove out to where Lower Powlett road cuts the rail trail.  I ran back towards town.  I had predicted 4:30 pace for a 22:30 time.  I was right on pace in the first at 4:29 but then quickened in the second to record a 4:23.  I pulled back a touch (but had to be careful not to slow tto much) in the third for a 4:37 and then had to pick it up again in the fourth.  Again I overdid it, too fast, running a 4:21.  I eased back in the fifth to run a 4:37 and my 5 km time was 22:25, five seconds under.  All up I was 22 seconds under for the total of the three legs!  Not too bad.  It was a good concept.

While Saturday's result was a nice surprise there was nothing good about the run on Sunday.  The weather was terrible with a cold gale blowing from the west.  My left heel has been stiff and sore for a fortnight now and it took forever to get it stretched in the cold.

Monday July 26th to Sunday August 1st
I continue to make up my program on the go.  My left heel is sore again - after a year of being good - and I'm not keen on it sticking around.  I lay in bed this morning and thought about running then decided that I would walk at recess (teaching from home still) and run at lunchtime.  I walked 3 km at 11 am and felt like I was getting good stretch into the heel and decided that I need to have a few days off running.  While I am still at home I can get in a few walks.  Today I walked againg at lunchtime (3 km) and again before dinner (3 km) to end up with 9 km for the day.  I'll do similar tomorrow which I hope is the last day of remote teaching.

Tuesday was the final day of the full lockdown and I got out for four walks, before work, recess, lunchtime and at dusk, totalling 12.5 km.  I walked again on Wednesday, before and after work, totalling around 6 km.

After work I went out to the beach and explored the new dunes at a super high tide.  Then a group of us met for Headlampers to celebrate Bill Barry's finishing of Run Down Under.

The body was stiff after the late run on Thursday so I stayed in bed on Friday, with a beach walk after work to give the ankles a stretch.  On Saturday morning I stayed in bed a bit and then headed out to the Inverloch parkrun course.  I was about an hour late, starting the parkrun freedom run just after 9am.  I was happy with the pace and seem to have pulled up well.  I walked 2 km on the beach after the main run.

Another lovely sunny morning, although the sun wasn't up for most of my run, and I decided to just do a real easly run to give the ankle only a little stretch.  It feels like it is healing though.

Another really tough run.  I'm not sure where I'm at currently but I am not enjoying the running.  It just hurts too much.  My fitness is down but the left heel is really annoying me.  Stiff and sore for every run.  On today's run I made a decision - I am writing off the rest of the AV season.  I am just not running well enough.  Maybe I'll get back there one day, maybe I left it too late?  I was due to run at St Annes this Saturday.  I have decided to just slow it right down dor a bit and just run at a comfortable pace, not the real slow like in '20 but just so that it doesn't hurt.  The plan is for a lot of 40 minute runs and some longer runs too - to build fitness.  I am also going to work on my core and hit the punching bag again, build my all-round fitness.  I am due to run 10 km at Melb Mara in October so I will start building towards that from scratch.

Then as it turned out this afternoon, the AV race is off as we are back in lockdown - Lockdown #6.  After work I went out to Inverloch for Headlampers, my last chance to run with others for at least a week.  I'm not looking forward to another lockdown!

On Friday morning we were back in lockdown all because of an outbreak in the north west suburbs of Melbourne - nothing in regional Victoria and certainly nothing near us!  I had a rest day after the Thursday evening running and then I had another break from running on Saturday to let the heel recover (yes I WAS thinking of writing heel heal!).  In the meantime I set up another virtual #2-4-FIVErace for the running group for the weekend.

On Sunday I went for a warm up and my attempt at the #2-4-FIVErace.  I nominated 5 minute pace for the k's and 25:00 for the time.  I was looking ok in the warm up but never got abywhere near it in the run.  This was another low point.  I had considered not racing and should have gone with that thought.

Monday August 9th to Sunday August 15th
On Monday I started to rebuild from scratch.  Inexplicably I have lost all fitness and form.  So I will be running without effort for the rest of August (at least).  That means I will run as fast as my body lets me go, and hopefully get quicker in the process.  I am also going to up the distances to build some fitness.  The goal is the run ok at Melbourne marathon 10 km in mid-October.  I will be hoping for a sub 45 minutes run there!

On both Monday and Tuesday mornings I hopped straight onto the bike after the run for a 7 km recovery ride.  On Wednesday I didn't runn, cycling 16 km instead.

After a rest day on Wednesday - with a morning cycle - I cycled again on Thursday morning, saving myself for a Headlampers run after work.

On Saturday morning we were back at parkrun !!!!!  It was great to be able to run with the parkrun family again after another big break due to the Covid restrictions.  I ran a solid first kilometre then ran with Brett for the 2nd to 4th.  I pushed again for the last km.

On Sunday morning I ran in brilliant sunshine and the wind out at Inverloch.  Most od the second half was on the low tide exposed sand.  In the incomplete tenth kilometre, just after getting back onto concrete, I was running at sub 5 minute pace without too much effort.

Monday August 16th to Sunday August 22nd
It was showery and windy on Monday morning and that was enough to tempt me to stay in bed and avoid a run.  On Tuesday I was out for a 10 km run, starting slowly but finishing with some sun 5 minute pace.

I discovered parkrun way back in August 2013 in West Australia while travelling around the country.  It was an immediate addiction, so much so that the next week was planned so that I would be in Rockingham - the only WA parkrun south of Perth in 2013.  Back home I had to drive to Berwick to run parkrun so I worked to help get a local event started, at Inverloch.  We started in September 2014 and I have run most weeks since then.  It has slowed down with the Covid interuptions but on Saturday I ran my 300th parkrun, a special milestone personally - the 300 club!  I haven't had much pace lately but I did manage to run my milestone at just a tick under 4:30 pace, running a 22:19 with each kilometre quite consistent.

I followed up with a 30 km ride on Saturday afternoon - out to Kilcunda and back.  They have announced that rural Victoria is going back into lockdown, I suppose we call this lockdown 6b since Melbourne never came out of lockdown 6.

On Sunday evening I received some news that was very unsettling.  That, combined with a return to remote teaching left me in a very dark place on Monday morning.  I struggled to get going but eventually got my day started but without a run.  I did cycle after work.

On Thursday it was a nice enough morning but I couldn't be bothered.  I thought about runnung, thought about cycling but then just lay in bed.  I got out on Friday morning and ran the three Wonthaggi hills.  I had some nice sub 5 pace going in the second half of the run.

With another lockdown in full swing I organised the Road Runners third #2-4-FIVErace.  I ran my course on Saturday morning.  I ran to the edge of the Wetlands for a warm up and then set off for my 5 km, trying to hold 5 minute pace the entire way.  I found myself a touch under as I went along and having to slow down.  My 2nd km was 5 seconds under and my 4th was 6 seconds under.  My time was 1 second under to be only out by 12 seconds.

Monday August 30th to Sunday September 5th
I got out for a run on Monday to get the week started but my energy levels were very low.  It was a nice clear morning.  The weather is improving and the sun is now rising much earlier.

I had a rest day on Wednesday and went on the bike instead.  On Wednesday I made a dietary change, getting to the supermarket to buy a whole heap of fruit - to start having a daily fruit smoothy.  While my run on Thursday morning started slowly I was around 5 minute pace from the second kilometre and was runnung much better than in recent times.  There was a significant jump in my average stride length, moving up to 1.32 metres (from the mid 120s).

Saturday and another weekend in lockdown (despite the fact that the virus is nowhere near us down here on the Bass Coast!).  Lying in bed I noticed a big segment across town from Mitre 10 to South Dudley road - on the rail trails.  I decided to incorporate it into my run and have a push there.  I have decided that, regardless of whether parkrun is happening, I need a faster element to my Saturday runs.  I gave it a nice push for about 3 km of 4:40ish pace.  The ankle / heel is feeling much better now and not stiffening up anywhere near as much as it was.  After finishing the run I jumped on the bike and replicated the route.

Monday September 6th to Sunday September 12th
I took the day off running on Monday and couldn't face riding in the cold wind.  A couple of walks was my only exercise.  On Tuesday morning I ran and ran well, for the first time in ages.  My first kilometre was around 5:20 and then I was under 5 minute pace all the way.  It felt good to be "running" again.

On Wednesday it was announced that Regional Victoria would be coming out of lockdown at midnight on Thursday.  With vaccination rates increasing there is the possibility that lockdown #6 will be our final lockdown.  Lets hope so!  My final lockdown run was a 10 km route on a mild and windy morning.  It was a solid run with a good finish.

71 - the winter competition - seeking improvement

XCR #2 at Lardner park was tough!  I am unfit and have no speed.  The lack of speed comes from my inability to raise my knees.  It has also lead to a significantly shorter stride length.  I am struggling a bit with my health, batting Membraneous Nephropathy - a condition where proteins leak from my kidneys and this causes significant swelling in my lower legs.  I am also on medication for high cholesterol that I think is also hindering me.

I know where I have to improve.  The question is - am I up to it?

Monday May 24th to Sunday May 30th
Serious training started on Monday morning. Right from the start I was running quite well.  I did come out of the weekend with a very slight sore spot on the right hip and tenderness in the quads.  I ran to Bilson street and pushed up the hill there.  I then ran to the Rec reserve and combined running with step ups.  In sets of 25 I stepped up onto the seats in the stand there.  In between the 2nd & 3rd then 3rd and 4th I ran a fastish lap of the oval on the outside of the fence (road).  Then I headed home and ran at sub 4 minute pace on my Ivor street segment.

I had a couple of rest days on Wednesday and Thursday but it didn't do much for my body soreness.  My right hip is sore as is my left inside upper leg.  On Thursday Victoria went into a 7-day lockdown due to a Covid 19 outbreak.  We have a seven day return to remote learning.  I have decided to try and use it to toughen up my body with repeat efforts.  I will also do a run with step ups most days.  On my Friday morning run I did three sets of 20 step ups with an outside lap of the oval between each set.  I also rode 16 km before my second run.

Surprisingly I was feeling good on Saturday morning and started my 10km run with a 5:20 then got quicker.  I ran the first 5 in 24:56 and then the second 5 in 23:49.  I rested then followed up with an 18 km bike ride, then rested again and went for a short run with some stepu ups at the Rec Reserve.

Over the first three days of lockdown FOUR I have run 38.6 km and cycled 53.9 km.  My body is doing well.  The step ups seem to be helping.  My legs were a little tired this afternoon and my right calf is sore when stretched real tight but generally it is doing well.  The swelling in the lower legs seems to be don as well.  I did run an easy paced run on Sunday afternoon but that was more just being cautious.  My fitness appears to be on the rise too.

Monday May 31st to Sunday June 6th
It was 2 degrees with frost everywhere when I set off for my run on Monday morning.  It was a slow run but I feel that was more because I just couldn't get going in the extremely cold air.

I was out for my third 10 km in four days on Tuesday morning and running quite well right from the start.  I finished with a 4:40 in the tenth.  On Friday morning I weighed in at 87.4 kg.  This morning my weight was 85.0 kg (regular time after getting up) and the 84.4 kg after the run.  I have been maintaining the cycling too with rides in each of the past four days.

Wednesday was day six of Lockdown #4 and I followed up the morning interval run with a lunch run and step ups at the Rec Reserve.  I may have bitten off too much with the morning interval run, taking on kilometre intervals, as I was stuffed at the end.  I upped the step ups to 80 in four sets with an outside lap of the oval between each.  Late in the afternoon I went on my sixth cycle in as many days, covering 20 km - my longest distance.

The past seven days we have been in Covid 19 lockdown and I have been teaching from home.  I was determined to work on my fitness during the break - and make the most of the 2 hours exercise per day.  Every day bar Tuesday I ran morning and afternoon (lunchtime) and then cycled at the end of the day.  I ran 13 times and covered 86.5 km and cycled 7 times to cover 128.6 km.  I also combined running with step ups at the Rec Reserve on most days and managed to do 400 step ups.

I am fitter and stronger.  I have lost in excess of 2 kg (and have been eating a lot to deal with my raging hunger).  I have run with some improved speed and that is my next area of focus.  I will be combining sprint sessions with step up workouts on some days.

After the seven BIG days I had a total rest day on Friday and even went for a massage after work.  My body feels good.

On Saturday morning there was again no parkrun due to the Covid shutdown but a group of us were able to meet up at Mirboo North for a run on the GRRT parkrun course.  It was my first real test of where I have been able to get to and I felt for the first half that I was running well and had more levels to move up to.  It was a push up the hill and I tired near the end but it was a positive split and I kept the pace progression going.  I was still able to accelerate a few times in the last two km which is something I haven't done in recent times.

After a Sunday lie in to listen to music I headed out to inverloch for a longer run.  I headed out to the Bluff first and ten all the way along the coast road to the RACV resort.  It was slow paced early but I did have a strong finish.  It was my longest run, and first hour plus (67 mins) run, since April 5th.  The 13 km plus run took me to a 71 km week.

The week started with a very dark and windy run around town.  I started well with a 5:19 but, even though I felt I was running well, I didn't increase my speed until the fourth kilometre.

On Wednesday night armageddon hit - this winds picked up to gale force and the rain came in a deluge.  Large parts of south east Victoria lost electricity until some time on Friday and some much longer.  I ran in the wind - just to the Rec and back - on Thursday morning and then in the eerie calm on Thursday evening as the sun was setting and the town was going into TOTAL darkness.  On Friday morning I ran in the eerie fog with half the town switched back on and the other half still in the dark.

Monday June14th to Sunday June 20th
With a day off for the Queens Birthday holiday I headed back to Inverloch for another coastal run.  It was well worth the drive as the inlet was an exceptional scene.  I had no expectations after such a strong finish on Sunday and was going to be happy to allow my body to dictate the pace.  I was surprised that I was able to run so well - my 10 km time was seven seconds quicker than on Sunday - and finish so strongly.

On Wednesday morning I got out quite early - it was very dark - but didn't check the radar so got hit by some rain.  I ran 200 m intervals with an 800 m rest.  I will keep the intervals at 200 for the time being but gradually shorten the rest.

I had a rest from running on Thursday but did get in a 19 km cycle after work.  On Friday morning I ran into town, up the McBride Ave hill three times and then back via the Rec Reserve where I did sets of sit ups, totalling 60.

Saturday and again no parkrun!  There are crowds at local footy but we are stopped from gathering at parkrun.  It is more than annoying!  So the not parkrun crew met at Leongatha to try out the new rail trail.  We ran as a group with not a lot of pace so at the end I drove to Korumburra and ran my quick nottie there!  I was pretty happy with the pace up hill on the way back - a negative split!

I felt good after the runs on Saturday and even managed a 23 km cycle in on Saturday afternoon.  I decided that, instead of a longer run on Sunday, I'd push for a 5 km time trial.  I ran on the Road Runners handicap course, hoping to get down near 4:12 average pace (under 21 minutes).  My first kilometre was a 4:05 and I was able to average that pace and run a negative split.  It was a hard effort but I was thrilled that I could maintain the pace.  My fitness is really improving!  It was my fastest time this year and, with a stride length of 1.55m, my stride was the best since I ran a 19:47 on December 5th late last year.

The new week started with a 10 km run for the Winter Solstice.  I was a little stiff - but not too bad - after the running on the weekend so took it easy with a stronger finish.

Tuesday was another day with the temperature dropping down to near zero and I just couldn't face another cold run so I stayed in bed.  Wednesday morning was much better so I was out running 200 metre intervals.

Friday - last day of the school term and I was very tired! - and I stayed in bed, choosing to not run.  Weather was miserable after work so I pulled the pin on a short run then too.

I was back at Inverloch parkrun on Saturday morning.  Apart from Easter I have been away for far too long.  Emma, Brett and Jack were there and I got to look after Jack while Em ran in the last 2 km.  I started at the front and led the pack up the hill the first time.  It was great to be back out there.  Four runners passed me and I struggled with my fitness level - the chest was tight - but I did start with a 4 minute kilometre.  The pace dropped back in the second and third then I picked it up again towards the end.

Well what does the week hold in store?  I am on school holidays and have a trip to Cairns booked but the Covid 19 virus is popping up all around the country and there are huge doubts as to where I will be able to travel.  It's a wait and see game at the moment.

I started the week with a long run at Inverloch.  I intended a long run on Sunday but ran into an old work colleague and ended up chatting to him for half an hour, so shortened the run.  I ran well and managed my fastest kilometre in the fourteenth.

I drove out to Inverloch on a sunny winters morning on Thursday, parked at the boat ramp and ran around to the surf beach with a bit of a run (and interval number 3) on the sand.  It was a good quality run with some good speed.  I followed up on Thursday evening with a Headlampers run with the group.

Friday was a day off.  I had thought about a cycle but the rain (early) and wind (later) prevented me getting out on the bike.

On Saturday I was reasonably fresh at parkrun but the air was just too cold and heavy.  I was happy with the consistency of pace, and my ability to up the speed in the last kilometre.  It was another negative split.
Sat 3/7 am:  3.64 km - 5:14 average pace - 5:04 fastest km - Ave stride 1.29 m
Sat 3/7 am:  Inv parkrun 7th  21:13  -  4:18, 4:15, 4:19, 4:16, 4:10 - Ave stride 1.49 m

On Sunday I was up at 2:30 am to drive to Tullamarine, then on a plane to Queensland.  I am staying in Palm Cove, north of Cairns.  So there will be a week of warm weather running.

Monday July 5th to Sunday July 11th
After some sleep revovery on Sunday night it was off to explore the area with a run in the 20 degree morning heat at Palm Cove.  It seemed quite humid too.  It was nice running beside the ocean but I didn't have a lot to give.  It took me forever to get down below 5 minute pace but then I finished with a fast kilometre.

Mon 5/7 am:  9.30 km - 5:18 average pace - 4:37 fastest km - Ave stride 1.26 m
Tue 6/7 am:  9.03 km - 5:04 average pace - 4:41 fastest km - Ave stride 1.30 m

I have been struggling to get going early in the runs this week due to a few factors.  Firstly my bed is a bit soft and I wake with a stiff back.  I also pulled up stiff from Saturday's parkrun but that has been improving during the week.  Then there is the humidity.  Today I ran in 85% humidity and it is really zapping, especially coming from the cold runs back home.

Wed 7/7 am:  6.01 km - 5:04 average pace - 4:40 fastest km - Ave stride 1.32 m
Thu 8/7 am:  6.09 km - 4:58 average pace - 4:43 fastest km - Ave stride 1.34 m
.... 5x 200m intervals (ave pace):  4:05, 4:10, 4:10, 4:05, 4:00, (4:10)

After four days of running in the tropical warmth and a bit of humidity it was just starting to feel ok.  It will be really interesting to now see the effect of going back to the cold of Victoria and how my running adjusts.

Friday was my travel day so no running.  I did think about a bike ride when I got back but I was too tired adter the 3am get up.

On Saturday I was off to Cruden farm for the AV cross country there.  CROSS COUNTRY IS TOUGH! Real cross country that is.  The hills weren't too bad and it was a nice course but the soft ground is the killer.  It takes so much out of you.  I wasn't prepared for a 12 km run but, despite the soreness, I am reasonably happy with my run.  The average pace was better than at Lardner Park and, while there was a slight drop off in pace, I was happy with the consistency.  My first km was 4:34, my fifth was 4:33 and my ninth was 4:42 pace.

Sat 10/7 am:  11.60 km - 4:44 average pace - 4:32 fastest km - Ave stride 1.34 m

Sunday was the longest run, somewhat poorly timed for me the day after an AV cross country but I managed to get to the last three courses in the afternoon.  I ran the Grand Ridge Rail Trail at Mirboo North in 26:00 at 1pm, then Koonwarra in 25:47 at 3pm and finished with Inverloch at 4:30pm in 24:54.  I was stiff at the start of each run but got up to speed each time, running most around 5 minute pace.  Tonight my back and legs are quite sore and stiff.

Monday July 12th to Sunday July 18th
My body was so stiff on Monday morning.  I did get up though and set out on a very slow jog just to get my muscles moving.  And it was slow, I was struggling to get under 6 minute pace.  I ran by the rec reserve and did sets of situps, getting in 60 of them.

Mon 12/7 am:  5.83 km - 5:50 average pace - 5:41 fastest km - Ave stride 1.18 m - 60 st up

Tuesday was a day off running as I had an early start to get to the bus for the year 12 camp.  The step count was up on the tertiary tours on camp and I got to run around the city on Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

Wed 14/7 am:  5.66 km - 5:21 average pace - 4:59 fastest km - Ave stride 1.26 m
Thu 15/7 am:  4.82 km - 5:17 average pace - 5:12 fastest km - Ave stride 1.25 m
